Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment from Our Chiropractor in Birmingham, AL

One of the leading causes of wrist pain is carpal tunnel syndrome.  Extended periods of use of electronic devices coupled with a lack of appropriate work ergonomics have resulted in a growing prevalence of this disorder.  However, patients who visit our Back on Track Chiropractic and Wellness Center in Birmingham can experience relief thanks to natural therapies instead of surgery or drugs.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Pain

Both work and leisure activities cause the wrist and the hand to bend and twist, which can result in wrist pain and other discomfort.  Carpal tunnel syndrome develops due to pressure on the median nerve.  This nerve controls movement and sensations in the thumb as well as movement in every finger except the smallest one.  It takes its name from the carpal tunnel, a space within the wrist through which the nerve extends into the hand.

Repetitive movements cause the tunnel to swell and narrow, creating nerve inflammation and wrist injury.  Some patients are so severely affected that performing everyday activities becomes impossible.

Signs typically develop slowly and first appear at night in individuals who sleep with bent wrists.  The most common symptoms include:

  • Tingling
  • Burning
  • Pain
  • Numbness

Our chiropractor notes that women are much more at risk than men are for developing this disorder.  These are common risk factors:

  • Carrying excess weight
  • Trauma
  • Pregnancy
  • Use of vibrating tools
  • Executing repetitive motions
  • Having certain health disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis

Chiropractic Treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

An early diagnosis is important in order to receive the best treatment and avoid the advanced symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.  During an initial consultation, our doctor performs a comprehensive examination.  This appointment includes discussing the individual’s health history and evaluating complaints and symptoms.  A diagnosis might also require imaging studies.

If our chiropractor diagnoses carpal tunnel as the source of wrist pain, he will determine the cause and generate a customized treatment plan.  Many plans contain a combination of therapeutic options such as:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Alterations in lifestyle and work ergonomics
  • Splints
  • Patient education on self-help steps
