Vertigo
The sensation of feeling off balance, or vertigo, can be frustrating and make it difficult to go about your daily activities. At Back On Track Chiropractic & Wellness Center in Birmingham, our chiropractor is experienced at treating vertigo.
What Is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a sense of dizziness, spinning, or imbalance. Vertigo can occur on its own, or it can be the symptom of another health problem. When people experience vertigo, they often describe a feeling of being pulled to one side, similar to how it felt as a kid after spinning in circles. There are secondary symptoms that accompany the dizziness of vertigo, and it's no surprise that these symptoms are similar to those of motion sickness. Many people with vertigo also experience nausea, headaches, sweating, vomiting, and abnormal eye movements.
Common Causes of Vertigo
Most commonly, vertigo is caused by problems in the inner ear. One of those most common causes of inner ear issues that cause vertigo is known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV. People with this condition have a buildup of small calcium particles in the inner ear, which can throw off the body's balance mechanisms. Scientists aren't sure why BPPV occurs. Meniere's disease is another common cause of vertigo. Meniere's disease causes vertigo and can also cause hearing loss. Viral infections, such as the common cold, can also cause vertigo. Other issues, including pregnancy, injury, and certain medications can all cause vertigo as well.
How a Chiropractor Can Help
When you come in for your first chiropractic appointment to treat your vertigo, our chiropractor will talk with you to understand the symptoms you've been experiencing. It's likely that you'll have a spinal adjustment, in which our chiropractor will align your upper spine. Some people find that this alignment relieves vertigo almost instantly. If the problem is caused by your inner ear, our chiropractor may also perform a technique called the Epley maneuver. The inner ear contains a number of bony particles that can move out of place in response to the health conditions mentioned above. The Epley maneuver painlessly manipulates the bones of the inner ear back into their proper place, restoring the balance detectors of your inner ear.
