Nutritional Tips from Our Birmingham Chiropractor

diet and healthy living in Birmingham.jpgJust as the quality of fuel you put in your car can alter its performance, the type of foods you ingest has a direct impact on your body’s performance, with poor nutrition leading to conditions like obesity and chronic illness. Here are some nutrition tips for healthy living from your Birmingham chiropractor.

Drink more water. Water is absolutely critical for life and constitutes the primary ingredient in human tissues. You can get some water from raw foods and beverages, but avoid alcohol and caffeine, both of which have a diuretic effect. Aim for a total water intake of 64 ounces each day.
Focus on fiber. Considering that it is simply a form of indigestible cellulose, fiber is a surprisingly useful component in healthy meals. Raw fruits and vegetables, grains, beans and other fiber-rich foods can boost your cardiovascular and digestive health while keeping your blood sugar levels more stable.

Get vitamins (and minerals) from vegetables. Vegetables contain potent amounts of essential vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber. The brightly-colored varieties also tend to be rich in antioxidants; substances that help prevent premature tissue aging and may even ward off some cancers. Prepare them raw or steamed as an important part of your nutritious, healthy meals.

Cut the convenience foods. Many of today’s pre-packaged “convenience foods” contain large quantities of sodium, sugars, fat and empty calories instead of the vitamins, minerals, proteins and complex carbohydrates your body needs. Replace them in your diet with vegetables, lean meats and whole grains to cut your risks for hypertension, diabetes, heart trouble and obesity. What aspect of healthy eating do you struggle with the most?
