How Backpacks Cause Neck, Back, And Shoulder Pain

While shoulder, neck, and back pain is a totally normal effect of carrying heavy backpacks, it's easily fixable. Carrying around the extra weight of books, supplies, and computers can compress the spine. It's also likely that your child's backpack is not perfectly balanced, creating more stress on one side than the other. This can cause stress on the joints, often resulting in back, shoulder, and/or neck pain. This effect can also be caused by carrying a heavy purse or even carrying around a baby. This type of pain typically gets worse over time and does not decrease on its own, as the issue is with compression and alignment, not muscle strength.

How A Chiropractor Can Help

Our chiropractor will assess your child's needs, and then recommend a course of treatment. Typically, a simple chiropractic adjustment- known as spinal decompression- will quickly ease back, neck, or shoulder pain. Adjustments every few weeks will help keep your child pain free- it's best if you can keep the adjustments regular enough that your child gets adjusted before the pain starts up again.
