preventative care for sports injury in Birmingham.jpgPrepare Yourself for Wellness

Preventative care makes good sense for athletes who want to preserve their musculoskeletal health. Here are some ways you can prevent back pain from a bulging disc, muscle strains and other injuries as you pursue your favorite sport.

Prepare for action. Make sure you incorporate a proper "warm-up" before stretching.  Warming up the muscles in a similar manner to that in which you plan to perform, before any athletic endeavor or stretching "cold," gives your muscles and connective tissues a chance to reach their maximum flexibility, reducing your chances of suffering a tear, pull or strain while you play.  Be sure to end with a cool down phase to your athletic activities to allow the body to adapt slowly back to its normal routine. Stay hydrated and make sure you have the right kind of clothing and equipment for safe, comfortable competition.  Many injuries of the feet, ankles, knees and lower back occur due to poor or inadequate footwear.

Massage your muscles. Massage can help your muscles before and after periods of sporting activity. Muscle fibers tend to tear during periods of exertion, causing lactic acid and inflammatory substances to build up in them. Massage increases the circulation to your muscles, helping them heal more quickly while expelling these built-up substances. Massage also relaxes the muscles to help you limber up before a competition.

Get your spinal alignment checked. No matter how straight you stood before your last big sporting event, the stresses and strains of daily life can take their toll on your spinal column. If you take those misalignments onto the court, field or track with you, the result could be a bulging disc, joint wear or soft tissue injury. Regular spinal evaluations, with minor adjustments performed as needed, will help you keep fit and perform at your highest level when it counts.
