Weight Loss: How Does it Work?

Two people running to help lose weight for a more optimal health lifestyle

Every once in a while, it seems there is a person who manages to lose weight fairly easily whenever they make up their mind to do so. However, for most people who have weight loss goals the journey toward better health and weight loss is a challenge. That's why many people look to a weight loss program in Birmingham in order to find a lasting way to take off the weight they need.

What Needs to Be Done to Lose Weight?

Many people who have never had to lose weight would suggest that to lose weight all you need to do is eat less and move more, but for most people, it is not that simple. What needs to be done, is the right amount of calorie deficit needs to be created with a person's diet and exercise plan. Whatever weight a person starts at requires a certain number of calories to maintain. Through the right combination of eating less and exercising, a deficit amounting to several hundred calories a day may be created. In theory, when that deficit reaches 3,500 calories, it will translate into a pound of fat loss. When losing weight, the main goal is to lose fat rather than muscle or some other weighted substance in the body that is part of what is needed for optimal functioning.

What "Weight" is Made of

In order to have the best chance at successfully completing a weight loss program in Birmingham, it is helpful to know what your weight is made of. There are a total of seven things that come into play when you step on the scale. Those include ;

  •  Muscle
  •  Bone
  •  Organs like your lungs, heart, and liver)
  • fluids (including blood)
  •  body fat
  • waste inside your digestive tract
  •  glycogen, a  carbohydrate in your liver and muscles that are used as a backup fuel

What Happens to Weight When You are Trying to Lose It?

When weight loss goes as planned excess body fat is pulled out of fat cells and used as energy that fuel's weight loss and shrinks the fat cells that result in lost inches and pounds. When muscle is lost, the number on the scale may go down faster, however, fat loss is ultimately more meaningful and healthy for the person who loses it than muscle.
