Back On Track Chiropractic in Birmingham, AL Discusses Proper Workplace Ergonomics

As much as we may not like to admit it we spend the majority of our time at the office.  Many people who work at a desk day in and day out report having neck or back pain.  Much of this pain can be prevented with proper workplace ergonomics.  To prevent a serious work injury following proper ergonomics is key.  Below, let's take a look at some simple pointers to remember to make sure you are sitting as safely as possible.

Chair Support

If possible, try to find a chair that has some lumbar spine support.  The height of your chair should allow your feet to rest flat on the floor in front of you.  If your feet do not reach the floor you can use a footrest to place your feet on.  The arms of your chair should be adjusted so that you can let your elbows rest naturally on the armrests.  This means your shoulders should be able to hang naturally with your elbows resting on the arms of the chair.

Computer Monitor

Your monitor should be about an arm's length away from your body.  Make sure that the monitor is at eye level or even slightly below.  If you wear bifocals it may be necessary to adjust your monitor slightly lower.  When looking at the monitor the brightest light source in the room should be to the side.

Key Objects

It is a good practice to keep your keyboard and mouse within easy reach.  If possible, use shortcuts on your keyboard to minimize mouse usage.  When typing keep your wrists straight to prevent unnecessary strain.
